Sameer is excited to celebrate Holi, the festival of colors, with his family and friends, but when it’s time to throw colored powder and water around, he’s not so excited about getting messy. Does he really want color splashed across his face? What if it gets in his eyes? Sameer’s big sister hears his worries and finds the perfect solution for Sameer to be comfortable and participate in the way most authentic to him.
Through simple text and vibrant illustrations, this book sets itself apart from other picture books about Holi because it tells an often untold part of the holiday — the reluctance to get dirty and the potential sensory overload that it can cause, especially for children.
The story is universally relatable; it’s a tale of wanting things just right. I was also one who never wanted to get my white clothes “ruined” and have to scrub all the color out from every crevice for what seemed like weeks following the holiday. I always felt ashamed for worrying about something no one else seemed to worry about and feared being labeled a “party-pooper” by friends, but like Sameer, I loved color and wished to play with everyone else.
This affirming text featuring Sameer’s loved ones listening to him and troubleshooting to ensure he has the most fun he can will make many children (and adults!) feel seen.
If you’re looking for even more context on Holi, an additional picture book we recommend is Holi Hai!, written by Chitra Soundar and illustrated by Darshika Varma.
